Let’s Get Physical

In physics, the ‘Law of Conservation of Energy’ states that the total energy of an isolated system cannot change. It is said to be conserved over time. Energy can be neither created nor destroyed, but can change form. For instance chemical energy can be converted to kinetic energy in the explosion of a stick of dynamite.

We went furniture shopping today and it reminded me of something my dad told me years ago. He said that shortly after they got married in 1956, he and mum went to a big furniture store in Liverpool. They found the perfect sideboard. It was solid polished mahogany with ornate carved doors on each side and a drop down door in the middle that opened with a key and concealed a mirrored cocktail cabinet. It was very classy but way too expensive for them to afford on dad’s plumbers wages. They eventually settled on a basic sideboard that was within their budget at a fraction of the price. They paid the deposit and arranged for it to be delivered to their new home.

A few days later, the sideboard was delivered. It was the one they couldn’t afford. The salesman could tell which one they really wanted and had switched the order. They got the classy one but only ended up paying for the basic.

That salesman has more than likely passed away by now but what a legacy to leave behind. A random act of kindness, that not only made a struggling young couple’s day but a story that makes you feel good every time you hear it, tell it or even just think about it.

It’s all physics; energy cannot be destroyed but can change form. The salesman felt the energy coming from a newlywed couple, that energy made him change an order and just now, all these years later, you felt the energy when you read about it.

None of us will be here indefinitely but the things we do while we are here, the energy we convert will be conserved over time. And that’s dynamite.

Craic on!
