Highly Infected

A while ago I read, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Dr Stephen Covey. In the book he talks about what he calls the ‘maturity continuum’ – the levels of dependency that demonstrate the relationship of the 7 habits. They are:

Needing others to get what you want. – This is the lowest level where we all begin at birth.

Relying on yourself to get what you want and need. – This is where you are when you get old enough to look after yourself.

Relying on cooperation with others to get what you want and help others get what they want. – This is the final stage of maturity, when you realise, you’ve got more chance of success if you get help from others and help them in return.

Here’s what Dr Covey said about interdependence;

“The interdependence concept appears to many to smack of dependence, and therefore, we find people often for selfish reasons, leaving their marriages, abandoning their children, and forsaking all kinds of social responsibility – all in the name of independence.” – Stephen R. Covey.
