How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain; Part 159.

April Fools Day is coming up. It’s always a fun day to be on the radio.

My favourite April Fools Day bit is the fake concert. On a couple of radio stations, I’ve presented shows that I’ve made out are live concerts. It’s pretty easy to do, you just get big crowd sound effects, recordings of live performances and then put tonnes of echo on all of the mics.

When I was at 2CRFM on England’s South Coast we put on a “concert” live from the AFC Bournemouth’s football ground, Dean Court. The “Concert at The Court” featured live performances from Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and many more. The Royal family were in attendance and there was even a fly past by the Red Arrows.

The trick is to make it sound as real as possible but make sure the acts who play are such big names that no one would actually believe that they would be booked to play a local radio station gig at 7am. The idea is for listeners to get the joke and just enjoy the way the thing is put together.

Just in case anyone did fall for it though, we sent a couple of branded vehicles and some promotional staff down to the football ground ready to hand out goodie bags to anyone who turned up expecting to see some of the biggest names in show business.

On April 1st, 2004 people did show up. It was the police and they were demanding to know why we hadn’t informed them that such a large event was taking place.

We presented another live concert last year on BOB fm. You can listen to what it sounded like here;
