How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain; Part 157.

Sometimes history repeats itself.

In late 2003, I got a dream job, actually two jobs. I was hired as Program Director and Breakfast Show host at 2CRFM on England’s South Coast. As I was replacing two people, I got the owners to agree to pay me both salaries.

Replacing the Program Director was the easy part because the previous PD had left. Replacing the Breakfast Presenter was trickier because the current presenter was still there. As PD, I was the one that had to give him the bad news. If that wasn’t awkward enough, this was not the first time this had happened.

Back in 1997, 2CRFM was the first British radio station I worked for when a came back to England from Australia. I ended up staying at 2CRFM for a year and a half. When I arrived in 1997, the bloke I was brought in to replace was still there, so for a couple of weeks there was an uncomfortable hand-over period before he eventually left. Now in 2003 when I returned, the Breakfast Show was being presented by this SAME BLOKE. In the years I’d been away, he’d made his way back onto the Breakfast show at 2CRFM.

So I ended up replacing him in the same job, TWICE!
