How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain; Part 135.

Radio DJs are really bad at hosting live events.

BRMB in Birmingham used to put on a big concert every year called ‘Party in The Park’. Tens of thousands of people would attend. I was one of the hosts in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Artists who performed included Tom Jones, Culture Club, UB40, Madness and at least three ex-Spice Girls. I’ve also been on stage and hosted at other radio station events around the country.

Music radio stations often put on these huge outdoor concerts and they’re usually pretty good shows. Unfortunately they’re hosted by the radio station’s DJs.

Radio DJs don’t have an act. They can’t sing, dance or play a musical instrument. Most of them can’t even tell a joke properly and without songs to back announce, a weather forecast to read or a contest to promote, they don’t actually have anything to say. They desperately want the crowd to react to them so they walk up and down the stage and shout at the crowd, ordering them to, “Make some noise!”

Bizarrely, crowds always respond. I’m sorry, maybe my threshold for entertainment is a bit higher than that because if I was in that crowd, I’d be making some noise but I’d be shouting, “WHY?”

Craic on!
