In previous Craics I’ve gone on about idiots I’ve worked for. I’m sure I’ll mention many more in the future. In this Craic, I need to say thank you to two great bosses.
Living on the other side of the world is especially difficult when there’s a death in the family back home. In June 1997, four months after we moved to Britain from Australia, Julie’s brother died in a car accident in New Zealand. We couldn’t afford for both of us to fly there so Julie flew home to be with her family in Northland, New Zealand and I stayed in Britain.
The morning after I’d dropped Julie off at Heathrow, I presented my Breakfast Show on 2CRFM in Bournemouth. When I got off the air, I went to see my Program Director, Tom Hardy and told him what had happened. Tom told me to wait in his office while he went to have a word with the General Manager, Jeremy Lewis. A few minutes later he came back and told me that one of the staff was going to drive me to Heathrow, 2CRFM would pay for me to make the return trip to New Zealand, I could have as much time off as I needed on full pay.
I’ve worked for some great people over the years but none of them compare to Tom Hardy and Jeremy Lewis. They were, without question, the best.
