How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain; Part 85.
Britain in February 1997 took a bit of getting used to after living on the New South Wales Central Coast. Julie and I had moved there so I could present the Breakfast Show on 2CRFM in Bournemouth.
After two weeks living in a hotel, we found a flat in Boscombe. At the time the pound was very strong against the Australian dollar. That meant we were paying more for a one bedroom, ground floor flat in Boscombe than we’d been paying for a two bedroom flat an hour north of Sydney in a complex that had a swimming pool and a tennis court.
We set the only bedroom up as an office so I could write and do show-prep, we slept in the living room on a sofa-bed. We didn’t have a TV and the car was still another eight weeks away on a ship, so I walked a mile to work every morning at 4:30.
The flat was OK, but there was a large crack that ran the length of the living room (bedroom) ceiling. That turned out to be a major problem. More on that crack in another Craic.
Craic on!
