How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain; Part 82.

19Jun14

There is no job security in radio. About the worst thing that can happen is if the person that hired you is replaced. Now you’re working for someone that didn’t choose you. Often they’ve got a different idea of how your show should sound or may even have someone else in mind for the job.

In February 1997, Julie and I took a punt. I quit my job as the presenter of the night-time show on 2GO on the New South Wales Central Coast and we moved to England. I’d been hired to present the Breakfast Show on 2CR FM in Bournemouth.

We didn’t have anywhere to live, so the radio station agreed to pay for us to stay in a hotel for two weeks while we looked for a flat. I would be starting work after our first week in the hotel.

The day after we arrived, we went to the radio station to meet everyone. The General Manager, Jeremy Lewis sat me down and said he had some bad news. While we were on our way over from Australia, Emma, the Program Director that hired me had left. A new PD would be starting in a few days time.

Craic on!
