How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain Part 65.
“Hey, Macca, how hard would it be to gatecrash a parade?” That’s what Tony, one of my regular callers asked me one night. It was 1996, I did the 7pm to midnight shift, week nights on 2GO on the New South Wales Central Coast. The annual Gosford City Christmas Parade was coming up and after Tony had called, I got lots of callers daring me to give it a go.
Over the the next couple of days I got the boss to allow me to borrow one of our branded Jeeps and a local party organiser agreed to deck it out with balloons. With no permission or paperwork, I just showed up early at the town centre car park where everyone assembled on the Saturday morning and slipped in between the scout band and Santa’s float.
As the procession made it’s way along Mann Street, on its way to Kibble Park, I waved at the crowds lining the street. I felt like a cross between the Pope and royalty. The best bit was when I saw a lady look right at me and mouth the words, “He did it!”
Turns out, it’s not hard at all to gatecrash a parade.
