How an air-conditioning mechanic in Sydney Australia became an award winning broadcaster in Britain Part 35.

05Feb14

I got interviewed for my second radio job while I was doing my first radio job.

In August 1994, I’d been working at 2PK in the Central West of New South Wales for about a year. I was on the air when I got a call off the air from Steve Whelan the General Manager at 5SE in Mount Gambier, South Australia. He asked all the usual interview questions and wanted to know about my experience. He must have called the office number and been put through to the studio because he didn’t realise I was actually on the air until I asked him to hold while I gave a time check and back announced the song that was playing. I made him hold at least three more times.

I don’t know if it was because he was impressed by my ability to multi-task but at the end of the phone call, he offered me the job of afternoon drive presenter on 5SE as long as I could start work there in less than two weeks.

Brilliant, I was moving to a bigger station! All I had to do now was work out where Mount Gambier is.

Craic On!
