Hawaii 25 – 0

We’re going around the world in twenty-five days, one day for every year we’ve been married.

Day 16 Auckland

It’s Saturday 6th October, we’re flying to Honolulu today because twenty-five years ago this week that’s where we went on honeymoon. This is the first time we’ve been back.

Day 17 Honolulu

We arrived in Hawaii before we left New Zealand. That’s because we crossed the International Date Line. Although we left Auckland on Saturday 6th October, we arrived here at night on Friday the 5th October.

Day 18 Honolulu

You only need to know two Hawaiian words, “aloha” which is a greeting and “mahola” which means thank you. You can’t help but smile when you say them, maybe that’s why the people seem so friendly here.

Today is Saturday the 6th October, again. I got a “happy birthday” email from the people that run a broadcasting convention in Minneapolis. It’s not my birthday till June 10th but I must have given them my date of birth at some stage and as Americans write the date backwards they think my birthday is on the 6th of the 10th instead of the 10th of the 6th.

We ordered omelets for breakfast. We may be in a South Pacific paradise but there’s no way of escaping the fact that this is America, portions are LARGE. These omelets were so big I think they might have actually been omms.

We rented a red convertible Ford Mustang V8 and spent the day exploring the island of Oahu, Hawaii’s main island. I learned that it’s impossible to drive a Mustang for the first time without singing “Mustang Sally”.

The beaches and scenery are beautiful and the shopping is good too. Downtown Honolulu is a lot like any American city with shopping centers and all of the big chains. We got a surprise in the department store, Sears. They were selling decorations, fake snow and Christmas trees. There was almost a whole floor decked out as if it’s already the festive season. So here we are, re-living our honeymoon from 1987, having trouble keeping up with what day it is, my birthday has moved and now Sears want us to think its Christmas!

Mahola.

There’s a Craic around the world!
