Kiwi Ingenuity

We’re going around the world in twenty-five days, one day for every year we’ve been married. Julie and I got married in New Zealand on 3rd October 1987. I hope you enjoy reading about our adventures.

Day 5 (continued) Auckland and Sydney:

Today was the longest day of the whole trip. Not only was it the most flying hours but we doubled back on ourselves crossing the Tasman Sea in both directions. That meant we went forward then backwards in time. It’s all because we couldn’t get a direct flight from Tokyo to Sydney so we had to go via Auckland. We were in the air for a total of fifteen hours and spent another four hours in Auckland airport. Hanging around in an airport might not sound like much fun but Auckland is one of the nicest airports in the world. It’s brand new, with lovely shops and I really like being around New Zealanders, they’re so laid back. We checked the info board for our flight and in the bit where it usually says “WAIT IN LOUNGE”, “BOARDING” or “DELAYED”, it said “RELAX”.

Julie and I have triple citizenship; Britain, Australia and New Zealand. Just before we landed in Sydney, we sorted through our passports, put away our British and New Zealand ones and got out our Australian ones. I saw a stewardess do a double-take, followed by a furrowed brow when she noticed we were shuffling six passports between us.

The only slight problem on the flight to Sydney was that my control handset for the in-flight entertainment system was held in place in the arm rest with duct tape. I hope the Air New Zealand maintenance crew didn’t think that sign that said “RELAX” included them!

There’s a Craic around the world!
